Make a Plan to Complete Your Local Engagement Requirement!

Did you know that all Juniata College students are required to complete a Local Engagement (SW-LE) experience as part of the general education curriculum?

Local Engagement is an opportunity to connect what you're learning in the classroom with real-world experiences, explore the Huntingdon community, and make a meaningful impact beyond campus.

There are two ways to fulfill your Local Engagement requirement:

1. Take an SW-LE Designated Course

Choose from more than 20 courses that incorporate community-engaged learning into the classroom experience. Keep in mind that not all Community-Engaged Learning (CEL) courses fulfill the Local Engagement requirement, so be sure to look for the SW-LE designation when selecting your courses.

2. Complete Your Own Community-Engaged Experience

Have an opportunity to get involved with a local nonprofit, community organization, or initiative? You may be able to use that experience to fulfill your requirement!

Students pursuing this option must submit their proposed experience for approval through the Experiences tab in Handshake before the semester begins. Once approved, students will be automatically enrolled in GE 101, which pairs with their community-engaged experience to fulfill the requirement.
